  • 18 November 2019 - Secretary’s workplace locations update message

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to update you on our Future Workplace program, which is all about making collaboration easier and ensuring our people’s experience in the workplace is more consistent across the Transport cluster, for both our regional and metropolitan Sydney offices.

In my message on 23 October, I said that leaders would begin sharing the first stage of proposed Sydney office moves with you from Monday 18 November. Unfortunately, the critical bushfire situation meant we had to postpone this week’s planned Transport cluster leadership forum to next Tuesday 19 November. It was essential that we instead focused our attention as leaders on responding to the bushfires across NSW.

It’s important that our leaders are briefed first on the workplace changes so they can talk to their teams, which will happen on Tuesday, so that now means we will be sharing the information with you in a series of briefings from Wednesday 20 November, and available online later in the day.

I appreciate this is two days later than originally planned, however, I believe it was the right call to make and you will still have plenty of time to provide your feedback on the proposed moves up until the consultation period closes on 6 December.

First stage of office locations moves in 2020. The moves in 2020 are focused broadly on our Sydney CBD and northern Sydney office locations, with reviews of the remaining Sydney metropolitan locations and regional locations across NSW happening later.

In early November, we shared the office locations that were under review. I also said that we would consider teams at other sites if it makes sense to co-locate teams that need to work closely together. I would like to reiterate that these moves are all about enabling our teams across the cluster to work better together and to ensure our new way of operating can be achieved.

Work location is an important issue for everyone and a factor to consider in your work-life balance. For this reason, there will be a big focus on providing more information over coming weeks and months. There will be briefing sessions and you will have the chance to ask questions about the proposed moves. You will also be able to access a range of services designed to support and help you work through the personal impact of these location changes.

The Future Workplace intranet page will have more information about workplace location moves and answers to many of your questions.

Lastly, thank you all for your continued focus on keeping our transport network running and people and goods moving during this difficult time for many communities which are impacted by the bushfires across NSW. People are relying on us and I’m proud to say we are continuing to deliver our best for the people of NSW.

    Rodd Staples

    Secretary

  • 4 November 2019 - Secretary’s Evolving Transport message; start of consultation

    Hi everyone,

Over the last six months we have been evolving as an organisation to build on our success and take the delivery of integrated, customer-centred services to the next level.

Our challenge has been to organise ourselves more effectively and work differently with our customers, stakeholders and partners so we can successfully deliver Future Transport. That’s why we embarked on the Evolving Transport program and today we’ve reached a significant milestone with the announcement of the proposed top level structure and functions for each division across the Transport cluster.

My video explains how the proposed structure will support us in working together to deliver better customer and community outcomes.

Detailed information about each division’s top level structure and functions will be shared by your division leader today.

I’d like to thank everyone who has provided feedback on everything we’ve proposed so far. Your ideas and insights have been integral to our decision making and it has influenced our thinking around how we work right across the Transport cluster, not just how we work within divisions. A key priority for our transformation is putting a real focus on our people. As Secretary, I’m very passionate about leading an organisation where everyone can have their say and help shape our future.

I’m now looking forward to hearing what you think about these proposals, so please take a good look at all the changes for each division and keep sending us your feedback.

All the information will be available on this website and you can provide your thoughts on the proposals until 29 November.

  • 1 November 2019 - Scope of 2020 Sydney office moves confirmed

Our Future Workplace strategy is being delivered in phases. The first phase in 2020 focuses on bringing teams together into new and existing sites across Sydney CBD and northern Sydney. Find out more.

The Future Workplace program is focused on creating consistent workplace experiences across the cluster, bringing teams together and consolidating our property footprint in line with NSW Government accommodation policy. Over time, this means we will review all of our office accommodation across NSW and look for opportunities to bring our teams together where it makes sense.

This is all about enabling our teams across the cluster and across the state to work better together and to be able to work differently. This will underpin the success of our new operating model and enable us to deliver better customer and community outcomes.

The first phase of moves in 2020 is focused broadly on our Sydney CBD and northern Sydney office locations. Plans for our remaining Sydney metropolitan offices - including those in Parramatta, Burwood and Southern Sydney – are currently under review and will inform our strategy from 2021 onwards.

Locations in scope for 2020 workplace moves

The scope of the Future Workplace program has changed with Evolving Transport as we needed to review our accommodation across the entire cluster and reflect our new operating model.

The locations in scope for review in this first phase include the buildings we need to move out of in 2020, as well as our owned and longer-term leased sites across Sydney CBD, Rozelle, Milsons Point and North Sydney.

Proposed new locations include our new Hubs in Macquarie Park and Sydney CBD, and the sites we are retaining. Teams currently located in the retained sites may move to new locations in order to be co-located with their teams and stakeholders.

In some cases, conversations will also be had with teams at other sites if it makes sense to co-locate teams that need to work closely together.

When will I find out where my team is moving?

More information on proposed new 2020 Sydney workplace locations will be communicated from Monday 18 November in a series of briefings and you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the moves up until 6 December.

    Got questions?

  • 1 November 2019 – New change support sessions for staff

How do you react to change? What some of us find exciting, others can find unsettling, or even highly distressing?

With the recent announcements about Evolving Transport, People and Culture have created support sessions across NSW to help all of us understand how we can survive and thrive during times of change and uncertainty.

The 90 minute sessions – for employees and people leaders - provide practical tips on how to manage ourselves during times of change, as well as help those around us.

Participants reflect on their physical, emotional and mental state, understand more about common responses to change, and leave with tools, tips and a personalised plan to best ride the waves of change.

Sessions now available for registration, so find out how on the getting support page.

  • 24 October 2019 – Consultation opens 4 November; sign up for briefing sessions

As mentioned in Rodd’s message below, briefing sessions to share the proposed functions and top level structure of each division will be taking place from 4 November. You’ll have the opportunity to hear more from your Deputy Secretary (or equivalent division leader) about the thinking behind the proposed new structures and also have the chance to ask questions.

Register now to attend any of the divisional briefing sessions below:

    Corporate Services

    Customer Strategy and Technology

    Greater Sydney

    Infrastructure and Place

    Office of the Secretary

    People and Culture

    Point to Point Commission

    Regional and Outer Metropolitan

    Safety, Environment & Regulation

You can also find these sessions on your divisional page on the right hand side. You will also have four weeks to have your say and give feedback on the proposed top level structures and functions – the consultation period is from Monday 4 to Friday 29 November.

  • 23 October 2019 – Secretary’s Evolving Transport update

I’d like to update you on the next steps in designing our Transport cluster and give you more information about workplace location changes and how you can get involved to have your say on these important proposals over coming weeks.

Thanks to the many of you who have provided feedback on divisional accountabilities and interdependencies – this has been a key input into designing the functional model.

On Monday 4 November we will be sharing the proposed top level structure and functions of each division which includes outlining where teams will sit in the new structure, at a high level. These will be available to view on the Evolving Transport website, which means everyone can see the full picture for Transport, ask questions and give feedback over a four-week consultation period from 4-29 November.

Direct reports to Deputy Secretaries (and equivalents) will be briefed to ensure they understand any impacts for their functions.

RMS and TfNSW teams will be invited to attend briefings, and a range of face-to-face and online engagement activities will take place at multiple locations to make sure people from across the Transport cluster have an opportunity to hear more about the proposed structures.

Future Workplace – update on office workplace changes

We are close to finalising a detailed workplace strategy, which is all about making collaboration easier and ensuring our people’s experience in the workplace is more consistent across the Transport cluster, for both our regional and metropolitan Sydney offices.

In Sydney, our planned workplace strategy involves consolidating into new hubs over the next 4 years, starting with Macquarie Park and Sydney CBD in 2020.

The first phase of moves in 2020 is focused broadly on our Sydney CBD and northern Sydney office locations, with reviews thereafter of the remaining Sydney metropolitan locations.

More information on proposed new 2020 Sydney workplace locations will be communicated from Monday 18 November and you will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the moves up until 6 December.

I understand that work location is a very important issue for everyone and a significant consideration in your work-life balance, that’s why we are aiming to give people as much information and notice as we can.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge the hard yards that people are putting in to keep on delivering better transport outcomes for the customers and the communities we serve.

My thanks also to everyone for engaging with the changes we are making. I look forward to hearing your views as we continue transforming our organisation.

  • 16 October 2019 -10 Year Blueprint – How we’re making NSW a better place to live, work and visit

    supporting image

In 2018, we launched our Future Transport strategy and vision for a modern and connected transport network that gives people the freedom to choose how they get around, no matter where they live and work.

To guide us, we’ve set clear priorities for the Transport cluster and outcomes we need to achieve in the next 10 years including how Evolving Transport is accelerating us towards a more customer-focused, connected future – for customers, communities, the people of NSW, and for our people. These are outlined in what we call our 10 Year Blueprint.

Watch this video to learn more about what we’re doing now and over the next 10 years to make NSW a better place to live, work and visit.

We have also updated the Talking with your stakeholders about our change stakeholder presentation to include information about the Blueprint.

  • 16 October 2019 – Future Workplaces update

    supporting image

The Future Workplace program is focused on creating consistent workplace experiences across the cluster, bringing teams together and consolidating our property footprint in line with NSW Government accommodation policy. Over time, this means we will review all of our office accommodation across NSW and look for opportunities to bring our teams together where it makes sense.

Across regional NSW we are conducting a strategic review of the accommodation portfolio to deliver modern, efficient and agile workplaces that are consistent across the whole of Government, support service delivery, encourage collaboration and allow flexibility.

In Sydney, we are currently focusing on the moves into our new Macquarie Park and Elizabeth St, CBD Hubs, and the moves out of the buildings where our leases are ending in 2020.

Thanks to everyone who completed their Future Workplace team and individual surveys in July and August. We've been busy analysing this data to understand how teams currently work, who they work with and any special requirements. We're currently 'playing this back' to Divisional leaders via a series of workshops.

We understand moving to a new home office location is a significant change and you need time to understand and assess how it affects you and start any required planning, so we're working to give you as much notice as possible.

Using the business requirements gathered through surveys and engagement with leaders, scenarios are being developed to inform the recommendations about which teams will be co-located.

At the same time, we are working with the Deputy Secretaries in each Division to understand the team co-location requirements of the proposed new functional models. These proposed new work locations will be announced in alignment with the Evolving Transport consultation, likely to happen in November.

If you are based at Lee St Chippendale, Pitt St Haymarket, Zenith Tower & Help St, Chatswood and Giffnock Ave Macquarie Park click here to find out how you can get involved in a range of engagement activities kicking off this month.

Keep an eye on the Future Workplace intranet page for more information or email the project team at futureworkplace@transport.nsw.gov.au with any questions.
