Topic 6: Accountability

Accountability is about ownership and initiative. Accountable employees step up, and do what is best for the business. They take responsibility for results and outcomes instead of presuming that somebody else will do it for them. Employees who are held accountable are higher performers, have heightened capabilities, and are more dedicated to their roles. Collectively, this results in a high-functioning workplace.

Accountability is particularly important in the public sector because we are responsible for using public funds as efficiently as possible to provide essential services to the community.

You are being accountable when:

  • You achieve the goals in your PDP within the set time frames and to the expected standard
  • You complete a project that exceeds expectations, before it is due and under budget
  • You pull someone up because they’re not wearing the appropriate protective gear on site
