Topic 6: Accountability
Accountability is about ownership and initiative. Accountable employees step up, and do what is best for the business. They take responsibility for results and outcomes instead of presuming that somebody else will do it for them. Employees who are held accountable are higher performers, have heightened capabilities, and are more dedicated to their roles. Collectively, this results in a high-functioning workplace.
Accountability is particularly important in the public sector because we are responsible for using public funds as efficiently as possible to provide essential services to the community.
You are being accountable when:
- You achieve the goals in your PDP within the set time frames and to the expected standard
- You complete a project that exceeds expectations, before it is due and under budget
- You pull someone up because they’re not wearing the appropriate protective gear on site

Relevant job interview questions
- Can you identify any areas where you have implemented a program of continuous improvement and what was the benefit to the organisation in terms of productivity or efficiency?
- How have you kept track of progress on delegated projects for which you are responsible? Give us an example.
- Have you ever had to contact peers/team members/others in the organisation to ensure tasks were completed on time? Tell us about one of those situations.
- Give us an example of when you checked on the status of an important project / task / assignment and discovered it was being done incorrectly. What did you do?
- From time to time all of us encounter someone who is not doing a good job. Tell us about a situation you had like this. What did you do?
- Describe a time when you have implemented a Quality Assurance program/system? What steps did you undertake initially?
- What steps do you take to ensure health and safety risks are identified in the workplace? How do you address identified risks?
