The Transport cluster is responsible for planning, infrastructure and service delivery across all modes of transport. It delivers services, manages assets, and leads the development of safe, efficient and reliable movement of people and goods which contributes to economic growth in NSW.

The following divisions have been established in the new operating model.

  • Greater Sydney Division integrates transport modes to deliver customer-centred services and infrastructure for the Sydney metropolitan area
  • Regional and Outer Metropolitan Division focusses on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure
  • Customer Strategy and Technology Division develops long-term strategy across urban and regional areas and leverage new technology and insights to provide more integrated customer-centred solutions.
  • Infrastructure and Place Division delivers infrastructure solutions that create and connect great places and will be aligned to the new model.
  • Corporate Services Division provides effective corporate services and be aligned to the new model.
  • People and Culture Division ensures our people remain at the heart of our how we implement these changes.
  • Safety, Environment and Regulation Division promotes through research, policy, standards, education, monitoring and enforcing, the safety of our customers, our community, our staff and our supply chains, sustainability outcomes and environmental compliance, appropriate asset standards relevant to all modes of transport and an outcomes based approach to regulatory activities.

Within the Greater Sydney Division and the Regional and Outer Metropolitan Division are four operating agencies.


Sydney Trains

Sydney Trains is the operator of rail services across the metropolitan Sydney area, bounded by Berowra, Emu Plains, Macarthur and Waterfall.


NSW TrainLink

NSW Trains operates Intercity and Regional services focused on the specific needs of our intercity and regional customers.

Sydney Metro is the operator of the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. Metro rail services runs from Sydney’s booming North West region, through new underground stations in the CBD and beyond to the south west.


State Transit

State Transit is one of the largest and most modern bus transport providers in Australia.


Historically, there were also operating agencies called Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services. These operating agencies are being merged as part of the Evolving Transport initiative.
