Grave new world
As we wrap up the 18 month long archaeological program on the Central Station Metro works, a total of 108 potential grave sites were investigated, with 62 of these confirmed, as well as an additional four burial vaults uncovered. Back in the 1800s, the site was the location of the Devonshire Street Cemetery but after much debate, a decision was made in 1901 to move almost 40,000 graves to make way for the new Central Station.
