Hunter (inc. Newcastle)

Already delivered...

Roads

  • Upgrading NSW highways, including Pacific and Princes Highways to improve safety, reduce travel times and increase the load capacity so heavy trucks can bypass local roads.
  • Delivering upgrades on the New England Highway between Aberdeen and Willow Tree to improve safety, travel times and freight efficiency while reducing maintenance costs along this section of the highway. This four year program of work will be delivered progressively until 2019.
  • Two roundabouts on the New England Highway at Church Street (near Maitland Railway Station roundabout) and High Street (near Maitland Hospital) have been upgraded to improve safety and traffic flow.
  • To make journeys safer and more accessible for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists we’ve replaced the Fitzgerald Bridge over the Hunter River at Aberdeen, upgraded the Raymond Terrace to Dungog Road and resurfaced the pavement on the Golden and New England highways at various locations
  • The new overpass on the New England Highway at Church Street opened to traffic in September 2016.
  • Upgrading Tourle Street and Cormorant Road at Kooragang to improve traffic flow and cater for future growth. The project involves duplicating 3.8 km of Tourle Street and Cormorant Road between Industrial Drive, Mayfield West and Egret Street, Kooragang. The upgrade also includes construction of a second two-lane bridge over the Hunter River.

Public transport

  • Residents in the Hunter region now have better access between Newcastle and Sydney during the day on Sundays since we introduced an extra Dungog return service on the Hunter Line.
  • A new, fully accessible, multi-modal Newcastle Interchange opened on Sunday 15 October 2017. It is a major hub for the city and the Hunter, linking trains, buses, and taxis, and from early 2019, Newcastle Light Rail.
  • Newcastle Light Rail is now open, providing a frequent and reliable travel option throughout the city centre, connecting precincts, reinvigorating Hunter and Scott streets, and opening up great urban renewal opportunities.

Delivering on the plan (future)

Roads

  • Building a New England Highway bypass of Scone to improve traffic flow, travel times and safety for road users.
  • Delivering a package of upgrades on the Golden Highway between the Hunter and Dubbo, to improve safety, traffic efficiency, network reliability and freight access. Work on the upgrades started in 2016 and all projects are expected to be completed by 2022.

Public transport

  • We have a new intercity train fleet coming from 2019, providing a safer, more comfortable journey for you when travelling from Sydney to the Central Coast, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and the South Coast. The new trains will have improved accessibility, wider seats with arm rests, charging stations, digital signage, CCTV and air conditioning.
