Women in Transport: The future is now

As a part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the invaluable role that women play across the transport industry, this week we hosted a Women in Transport networking event, bringing together over 200 women and men from both the private and public sectors.

The event’s theme: The future is now; focused on the opportunities presented by our changing working environment and how the Future Transport team have leveraged these circumstances to create a flexible and adaptive 40 year strategy for the future of our state.

In his opening address former Transport Secretary Tim Reardon talked about the importance of gender diversity and addressing the pay gap, and how continuing to increase the number of female leaders will continue to be a priority across the public sector.

The conversation was then led by some of our successful female leaders in an interactive Q&A panel session.

Clare Gardiner-Barnes - Deputy Secretary, Freight, Strategy and Planning, hosted the event, and led the panellists in a wide-ranging discussion covering the Future Transport draft Strategy, new ways of working and the importance of collaboration across government.

Tessa Knox-Grant – Director, Future Transport Metropolitan Strategy, shared her knowledge on the impact of the Future Transport Strategy for Sydney and regional communities as well as the need for integrated transport systems in this ongoing process.

Meg Graham - Executive Director, People and Corporate Affairs for Group Rail, discussed the culture required to successfully deliver our Future Transport strategy as well as the emerging trends that will continue to shape our workforce into the future.

And finally, Sarah Hill - CEO Greater Sydney Commission, spoke about Greater Sydney Commission’s collaboration with Transport and other government agencies, in facilitating the creation of ‘30 minute cities’ that will be both liveable and sustainable for generations to come.

The event was a huge success and really showcased how we are continuing to empower women to participate and lead across the cluster.

Attendees walked away feeling excited and engaged by the Future Transport Strategy.
