Women in Rail Lunch

On Wednesday 31 October 2018, some of our Talent participants attended the Women in Rail Lunch at the Hyatt Regency. This event was run by the Australasian Railway Association.

The purpose of the event is to promote the value of a gender balanced Australasian rail workforce, acknowledge the challenges that as an industry we need to overcome, and foster a culture of appropriately championing women in rail. The event was attended by many industry players (government and private) including NSW TrainLink, Sydney Trains, Downer Group, CPB Contractors and TrackSafe.

The lunch was a great opportunity to get a better understanding of the Rail industry, the way it’s changing and areas of focus to improve the way we function as an industry. The lunch promoted discussion within each business around the role they play and how they can help to change the way the industry operates.

Our very own Stewart Mills, Executive Director, Engineering and Maintenance, Sydney Trains also shared some of the success stories across Transport. One of the highlights was the Keynote speaker address by Claire Madden, Social Researcher, Next Gen and Media Commentator. Did you know that there are currently FIVE generations present in the workplace? Claire spoke about generational differences, with a focus on Gen Z and how they operate within the workforce. The NSW TrainLink table had good laugh when they had to explain to Pete Allaway what ’salty’ means. It is something they never imagined explaining to the COO …

Claire promoted how the diversity of culture brings life to the organisation and provided insights into intergenerational behaviours.

At 3:11 Claire talks about Gen Z in the workplace.

Claire has also released a book on the topic, if you are interested, see below.

It was a great networking opportunity, and if the opportunity to attend presents itself to you it’s definitely worth going to!
