Focus on discretionary expenditure

DRAFT TEXT ONLY - NOT APPROVED

Overview

Transport is reviewing our cluster wide spend which is not committed, to ensure that decisions are focused on the value for our customers. We are also looking for ways to encourage our employees to be more considered in their spend choices. Transport wants to model alternate behaviours and choices that will enhance our people experience, while also ensuring we deliver the best outcomes for the communities of NSW.

Benefits

  • Deliver a consistent approach to discretionary spend which enables us to harness our collective buying power as One Transport organisation.
  • Create greater transparency and alignment of discretionary spend across Transport.
  • Demonstrate our commitment to be smarter in the way we use taxpayer’s money.

Communication objectives

  • To communicate our new approach to discretionary spend, and how this will help us improve the way we manage resources.
  • To deliver communications about the benefits of acting as one organisation in the way we invest taxpayer’s money, encouraging employees to think and act for the benefit of the cluster.
  • To tell the story of our journey towards being smarter with taxpayer’s money.

Key message themes

  • Transport is introducing a cluster wide approach to discretionary spend to help us be smarter in the way we spend taxpayer’s money.
  • We are introducing new ways of working and spending to deliver cost savings which we can then reinvest in delivering more services for our customers.
  • Transport is also delivering training to help employees manage discretionary spend more effectively.

The story

In the past …

Transport has previously had a disjointed approach to the way we invest and spend across the cluster. This means we are not making the best use of our resources, and not always delivering the best value for our customers and the communities of NSW.

Then something happened …

Transport has been challenged to be smarter in the way we use our resources. We need to continue to deliver new services and infrastructure to meet the needs of the communities of NSW. By introducing a cluster wide approach to discretionary spend, Transport is driving greater value from all spend.

So now …

Transport is now being smarter in the way we spend money, and we are reinvesting to improve customer services and technologies.

Key milestones

  • October 2019: Agree budget and measures to reduce spend.
  • November 2019: Scope cluster wide discretionary spend initiatives and timeline for implementation.
