Redundancy during this time

On this page you’ll find the current information about redundancy at Transport.

Redundancy for people covered by Awards or Agreements

Transport has lifted the temporary pause on forced redundancies for all employees covered by an Award or Enterprise Agreement. What this means for you will depend on your relevant Agreement or Award.

Transport has put in place a wide range of support services to help our people find new roles within Transport and guide them through the change.

Sydney Trains and NSW Trains employees

Employees who no longer have a substantive role as a result of a restructure may be declared excess and will be managed under the Deed.

TfNSW and Sydney Metro Award covered employees

Employees who do not secure a role in a new structure may be given the option to submit an expression of interest (EOI) in early redundancy through their branch.

At a later point in time, following the EOI process, TfNSW may need to declare staff excess. The employee would then be managed according to the Managing Excess Employees Procedure.

Roads and Maritime Services Award covered employees

There is a transitional provision in the Transport Administration Act that deals with no forced redundancy for Roads and Maritime Services Award covered staff.

If you are a Roads and Maritime Services Award covered staff member, and were at the time of the dissolution of Roads and Maritime Services, whilst you may be offered voluntary redundancy and/or redeployed to perform other duties, Transport for NSW will not proceed to make you forcibly redundant.

Redundancy for Senior Executives and Senior Managers

In September 2020, Transport lifted the temporary pause on forced redundancies for senior executives and senior managers (TSSE and TSSM). Read update from the Secretary, sent to Senior Managers and Senior Executives on 8 September.

What happens if I don’t secure a new role through organisational reform?

If you are not placed in a role when your new structure is determined (finalised), we will work with you to identify opportunities for you to be redeployed to another role across Transport. This can include relevant acting opportunities in roles. Our priority is to retain our talent and provide you with a meaningful role where you can continue to deliver the best for our customers.

If there are no appropriate opportunities for you within Transport, then we will consider options to exit Transport. Your exit date will be specified by Transport and will consider your personal circumstances alongside the ability of Transport to mitigate any operational risks that could be caused by a departure.

There are a range of options and support available to any senior executives or managers who do not secure a role in new structures.
