People at the Heart

At Transport, we place the customer at the centre of everything we do. To deliver the Future Transport 2056 Strategy, we need to ensure our people are equipped with the right tools and support. That’s why we’re also putting people at the heart.

The People at the Heart Strategy addresses the people challenges we have now, whilst focusing on building a workforce that is fit for the future. It’s about bringing people from across the cluster together to discover what they have to say. We’re harnessing the ‘collective genius’ that exists within Transport to co-design solutions and empower our people. We’re going to be agile, iterate, learn and scale solutions.

Last month, the People at the Heart Community of Practice invited graduates Bianca Lao, Meghan Holden and Jenny Nguyen to help paint the picture of where we want to be as an organisation. They joined the different voices and perspectives of our frontline and regional employees, senior managers and executive directors to influence the People Strategy.

Here are some of the projects that are creating a more positive people experience:

  • Leadership Framework

In this space, many co-design sessions have been held to shape the leadership behaviours we expect from our leaders to take us into the future – to be creative, caring, courageous, sustainable and empowering.

Some Talent participants shared their thoughts on the new Leadership Framework in focus groups facilitated by the Leadership Strategy team. It was a fantastic opportunity for our voices to be heard and be a part of creating a better people experience.

  • Hire to Retire

Hire to Retire is about fixing the basics like onboarding, performance management and Equip, so that employees will have a seamless experience.

A more connected and user-friendly processes are now being delivered, eliminating briefing notes and paper (where practical) and improving Equip. We’re addressing the common pain points that everybody experiences to enable our people to work smarter, not harder!

  • Onboarding

Did you know that it takes over 400 processes to get a log in for a new starter? That’s a lot!

That’s why the onboarding program is committed fixing the current process for new starters regardless of their role, agency and location. It’s about making sure employees can turn up on their first day, be able to log in and have all of their IT hardware. We’re fixing the basics and fixing what matters most!

Heidi Davidson, Onboarding Project Lead, and Samantha Cummins, Director Talent, giving a program update at the February People at the Heart Community of Practice workshop

  • Future Workplaces

We’re changing our workplaces across the cluster to help people work more flexibly and collaboratively. We’re learning from our people and current activity-based working projects to apply our lessons learnt to Future Workplaces.

Starting in May 2020, we’re moving from 15 offices to five hubs. Each hub is close to public transport and wonderful facilities and amenities. The workplaces will be fitted with activity based working environments with many collaborative spaces, design densities, meeting rooms and quiet spaces.

The future of Transport is now – that’s why it’s so important for us to support our people so that they can work better to deliver the future. How will you put People at the Heart?

If you have any questions or interest in the People at the Heart program, please feel free to reach out to the friendly People Transformation team! There are many exciting things in the works so make sure to watch this space!
