Staff innovation on show at the latest round of the Future Transport Innovation Incubator Program

The bright sparks of the Transport cluster were out in force last week as four more project teams showcased their innovative work from the latest round of the Future Transport Innovation Incubator program.

Born as a result of your feedback to find new ways to innovate and collaborate across the cluster, the Incubator looks at ways in which we can improve experiences for our customers, our own internal processes and the way we work together so we can become a more innovative and agile organisation.

The latest round was all about enabling collaboration across our cluster with project teams working on initiatives such as improving internal visibility of major projects, enhancing community within activity based workplaces, improving collaborative working environments and our ability to knowledge share across the cluster.

Over a three week program using Design thinking and rapid prototyping, project teams were tasked with coming up with a solution to their problem, by utilising their own experience and knowledge and getting out there to speak with our people. This also involved looking at best practice and peering into how other organisations go about collaboration.

Catherine Reilly Manager Policy, Future Transport Technology, TfNSW is part of the Knowledge Management project team who were tasked with improving knowledge sharing across the cluster.

“Two of our core values are collaboration and solutions and they recognise the need for open sharing of knowledge and information. It builds more productive engaged and highly skilled teams and helps us to be more innovative in the way that we approach solutions,” she said.

Kevin McClain, Planner for Infrastructure and Services at TfNSW is part of the Visible Project team who took up the challenge of increasing internal visibility of the status of big projects that are in progress.

“This is something the team and I have worked very hard on. It’s been challenging to work on this as well as our day to day work. It’s been really encouraging that all our agencies across the cluster are involved, and it was great to work with all teams from different areas,” he said.

Collaboration between all teams continues to be a strong focus in the incubator and the agile environment means stuff gets done as opposed to creativity being stifled by road blocks and red tape.

What happens next?

Teams will progress to pitching their solutions to the Transport Executive for funding.

If they get up, the solutions will be handed over to a lean, dedicated Future Transport project team to implement in collaboration with the participants and the relevant business area.

Jacinta Hargan, Director Future Transport Technology, said the results of the Incubator have been really encouraging so far.

“We’re almost at the end of this season’s program and it’s been a fantastic journey. We’ve already had 12 projects endorsed and either in development or have gone live. It’s an exciting time for the program.
