Private bus operators are providers of public transport in NSW. Services are provided in Wollongong, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area. PBOs provide services under the Metropolitan Bus Service Contract (MBSC) and the Outer Metropolitan Bus Service Contract (OMBSC).

Opal covers 17 PBOs, including PBO school bus routes. All Opal payment types except OpalPay are accepted for customers to travel on private bus operators.

The following table outlines the current list of private bus operators and the contract regions that they operate in (where ‘SMBSC’ is Sydney Metropolitan Bus Service Contract and ‘OSMBSC’ is Outer Sydney Metropolitan Bus Service Contract).

B-Line (B1)

B-Line (B1)is a 27 km bus rapid transit network between Sydney's Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore and the Sydney central business district. This double deck bus service is operated byState Transit.

All Opal payment types except OpalPay are accepted for customers to travel on B-Line.

On Demand buses

A number of operators also provide On Demand bus services, which allow customers to book a vehicle to pick them up from a location and take them to a local transport hub, shopping centre, business park or hospital. The new services are part of a NSW Government trial of On Demand public transport as a more flexible approach to delivering transport services and to improve connectivity to the existing public transport network.

Depending on the operator, a service can be booked either online, through an app or over the phone. Fares for each service vary, but in most cases fares are comparable to an Adult Opal single trip bus ticket.

Special event buses

There are special events routes in scope for Opal. Customers attending a special event using an Opal card will be required to tap on and tap off except where:

travel to or from that event is provided free of charge

the event ticket price includes a component to cover the cost of travel

Opal reloadable and non-reloadable cards are not accepted.

The following table outlines whether or not Opal is accepted on special event buses.

Table 8. Special event buses

Location

Current status

Sydney Olympic Park

Most major events at this venue are supported by integrated ticketing where the event ticket is valid for travel on public transport including major event buses. Customers need to show their event ticket to operator staff when boarding buses.

If transport is not included in a customer’s event ticket, a customer would need to purchase a special event bus ticket when boarding the bus, as Opal reloadable and non-reloadable cards are not accepted for travel on major events buses on routes that service Sydney Olympic Park. Tickets are not aligned to Opal fares.

Moore Park / Randwick

Special event buses are operated by State Transit between the city and:

Moore Park (Route 1 from Central Station and Route 3 from Circular Quay)

Randwick Racecourse (Route 32 from Central Station)

Rosehill Gardens Racecourse

Two return shuttle services marked "Races" run to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse: one from Parramatta Station / Parramatta Wharf and the other from Strathfield Station – Everton Road (Stand E). Return services run from P3 Car Park Bus Stop on James Ruse Drive to Parramatta Wharf / Parramatta Station and Strathfield Station.

All Opal payment types except OpalPay are accepted for customers to travel on special event buses.
