Inspirational Women Series event

On Monday 26 March 170 guests from across Transport gathered at the Sydney Convention Centre for the second event of the Inspirational Women Series. This series is part of Roads and Maritime’s commitment to increasing the representation of women in leadership positions throughout Transport.

Susana Henderson, Operations Manager Traffic Operations Centre, hosted the event and shared her career story to date. She enthralled the audience with her determination to succeed in male dominated roles, such as her time in the Army, all while juggling family commitments. She discussed the importance of not having to choose between having a career and starting a family.

Following Susana, Camilla Drover, Executive Director of Motorways at Roads and Maritime, provided insight into her personal life and some of the challenges she faced when deciding to pursue her career as an engineer. She also spoke of the role that engineers play in a time of heightened infrastructure delivery and the flow-on effects it has for communities and cities across NSW.

Wendy McCarthy AO, then led a discussion with Emma Alberici, ABC Chief Economics Correspondent. The two discussed the importance of having self-confidence to succeed in your career and give things a go.

“Do things your believe your capable of even if you don’t have the experience”, said Emma.

Wendy reminded the audience that “If someone asks you to do something it’s generally because they think you can”.

Additionally, Emma highlighted the importance of taking risks in changing roles as she explained “Half the fun of changing your job is learning”.

All four speakers were fantastic and inspired everyone with how they were able to overcome adversity and adapt to constantly changing environments.

The event concluded with networking and guests were able to talk over morning tea about some of the themes raised following Wendy and Emma’s discussion.

The third event in the series will be held in the coming months. If you are interested in attending please get in touch with Amber Gale from Roads and Maritime.
