Wuppertal Suspension Railway

Located in Wuppertal, Germany, the Wuppertal Suspension Railway is the oldest monorail system in the world.

The electric elevated railway has been in operation since 1901 and runs for 13.3 km through 20 stations. The hanging cars range from a height of 8 – 12 m and are designed to overcome the city’s hilly terrain, flood-prone river and high groundwater levels.

With the entire trip taking only 30 minutes, 85,000 passengers use the Wuppertal Railway daily to travel through the city to avoid the problems of intersections and traffic jams.
